Flight Duration Calculator

Estimate flight times between destinations.

How Flight Duration Is Calculated

The calculator combines your departure date and time into a single moment, and your arrival date and time into another. Subtracting the departure moment from the arrival moment gives the total flight duration, which is then displayed in hours and minutes. This works for same-day flights, overnight flights, and flights that span multiple days.

Why Flight Duration Differs From Distance

Two flights of similar distance can take very different amounts of time. Aircraft speed, wind and jet stream direction, the specific route flown, layovers, and air traffic delays all influence the actual duration. Entering the scheduled departure and arrival date and time gives the most accurate picture of how long a flight will take.

FAQ

How is flight duration calculated?

Flight duration is the difference between the arrival date and time and the departure date and time, expressed in hours and minutes. The calculator combines each date and time into a single moment and subtracts the departure moment from the arrival moment.

Why does flight duration differ from flight distance?

Flight duration depends on more than just distance. Aircraft speed, wind direction, flight routing, and air traffic delays all affect how long a flight actually takes, so two flights covering similar distances can have different durations.

Can this calculator handle overnight flights?

Yes. If the arrival date is the day after the departure date, the calculator correctly accounts for the extra day when computing the duration.

Can this calculator handle multi-day flights or layovers?

Yes. As long as the arrival date and time are after the departure date and time, the calculator will compute the total elapsed time, even if it spans multiple days.

Do I need to account for time zones?

This calculator uses the date and time you enter as-is and does not convert between time zones. If your departure and arrival times are in different time zones, you may need to adjust one of them to get an accurate duration.
