Road Trip Budget Calculator

Estimate your total road trip cost including fuel, lodging, food, tolls, parking, activities, and miscellaneous spending.

How Road Trip Budgeting Works

Road trip budgeting combines the cost of getting there with the cost of staying there. Fuel cost depends on your trip distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the price of fuel. Lodging and food costs scale with the number of nights and travelers, while tolls, parking, activities, and miscellaneous spending are typically entered as totals for the whole trip. Adding these together gives you a complete picture of what your road trip will cost.

Common Road Trip Costs

Most road trips involve a similar set of expense categories: fuel for the drive itself, lodging for overnight stays, food for the group, tolls and parking along the route, activities at your destinations, and miscellaneous costs like souvenirs or unexpected expenses. Estimating each category separately makes it easier to see where most of your budget will go and to plan accordingly.

FAQ

What does the Road Trip Budget Calculator include?

The calculator estimates your total road trip cost by combining fuel, lodging, food, tolls, parking, activities, and miscellaneous spending based on your trip distance, fuel efficiency, fuel price, number of nights, and number of travelers.

How is the fuel cost calculated?

Fuel cost is your trip distance divided by your vehicle's fuel efficiency, multiplied by the fuel price per gallon.

How is the food cost calculated?

Food cost is your food cost per day multiplied by the number of travelers and the number of nights. If you enter 0 nights, the calculator still counts 1 day of food so you get a realistic estimate for a day trip.

How are cost per traveler and cost per day calculated?

Cost per traveler is the total road trip cost divided by the number of travelers. Cost per day is the total road trip cost divided by the number of nights, using a minimum of 1 day for a trip with no overnight stays.

Can I leave a cost as zero?

Yes. Tolls, parking, activities, miscellaneous, lodging per night, and nights can all be set to 0 if they do not apply to your trip. Trip distance, fuel efficiency, and the number of travelers must be greater than 0.
